On Saturday 22 August, 1,670 women from 310 churches gathered to be encouraged and refreshed by God’s word at OneLove women’s conference. Hosted as a livestreamed event, women from across Australia, and as far and wide as Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, New Zealand, and the USA gathered in living rooms and church halls to learn what the Bible says about finding true rest.
In a year where routines have been uprooted, and where lockdown has challenged our addiction to busyness, the OneLove Committee wanted to help women to accept Jesus’ invitation of finding true rest Him (Matthew 11:28). In the words of OneLove Chairwoman, Madeleine Dudley:
“My addiction to busyness means that I can sometimes struggle to come to the Lord and spend time with Him. My prayer for OneLove 2020 is that we’d leave with a better understanding of Jesus’ invitation to find true rest. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. This isn’t because He demands less of us but because He helps us to bear the load.”
Plenary speakers included Amy Orr-Ewing (Senior VP, RZIM) and Kara Martin (Author, Workship) who preached on the theme: “Come to Me: An Invitation to Find True Rest”. Quoting Dallas Willard, Kara kick-started the event by reminding delegates that “hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life” and yet “hurry sickness” is a natural part of the human condition. Her talks prompted delegates to consider their reasons for chasing a hurried life, and how knowing a good and sovereign God can help busy souls to find deep and lasting spiritual rest.
Joining the livestream from her living room in the United Kingdom, Amy Orr-Ewing addressed our society's pursuit of materialism and how the pursuit of wealth and physical goods has caused us to feel busier and less happy. Unveiling the latest research in view of Scripture, she helped delegates to see their need to be "born again”, so that our identity is not rooted in the pursuit of materialism, but by our new birth in Christ, made possible by the Spirit.
OneLove also featured two testimonials from women who described how a relationship with God has helped them to find true rest in the day to day. Asian Australian writer, Heidi Tai, shared how the gospel of grace helped her to find true rest from her insecurities and thoughts of unworthiness. Bibbulmun and Spinifex woman, Tace Stevens, shared how knowing God has helped her to rest from anxiety and overthinking in decision making.
Care and Assistant Discipleship Minister, Jo Gibbs, also joined Kara Martin on the Q&A Panel, and shared practical wisdom on ways to slow down, the dangers and seasons of busyness, the different types of rest, idolatry of work, laziness, the biblical call to Sabbath and more.
The program also left plenty of time for delegates to reflect and pray over the contents of the conference over lunch and morning tea. In a year with so much anxiety and disconnection, OneLove was a timely event that empowered women to renew their strength in the Lord in the company of their sisters:
