KEC speaker Peter Adam on life, faith and what keeps him going ahead of eternity

19/2/2019

We are thankful to God that Peter Adam will be joining the KCC platform as a speaker at Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC). In this interview, Peter shares on life and faith, and gives some great tips on how we can persevere in the Christian life ahead of eternity.
1. What occupies your time during the week?

I have retired from full-time paid employment, so I now work at 2/3rd time; speaking at conferences, preaching at churches, training preachers, training and mentoring ministers, writing, and praying. Other than that I sleep, eat, walk the dogs, play the piano, catch up with friends, go to concerts, and read a lot!

2. Who is someone who has inspired or spurred you on in your Christian walk?

Many people have enriched my life. I came from a non-Christian family, so every Christian I meet is an inspiration and an encouragement. The man who converted me then met with me once a week for three years to disciple me, teach me the Bible, help me to pray, to answer my questions, and keep me accountable. And he prayed for me!
3. What do you think are the benefits of attending conferences like Katoomba Easter Convention?

It is encouraging to meet with lots of other Christians from different churches, and experience our unity to Christ. It is good to hear different people giving Bible talks, to benefit from different perspectives and different people. It is good to make new friends, and good for us to pray together and praise God together.
"Each morning I pray that this day would be my best day of loving and serving God." - Peter Adam
4. The KEC theme this year is "The end of all things: life on the edge of eternity". How do the 'end times' and promise of eternity with Jesus shape the way you live today?

Hugely. There are some sins which I don't commit because I know that one day the secrets of all our hearts and lives will be exposed when Christ returns. I know that any sacrifice or suffering or self-denial is worth it, because I am not living for this life but for the next. Having Jesus as my Lord means I don't need the approval of others: his 'Well done' will be worth waiting for. And I look forward so much to seeing the church, the glorious bride of Christ, in all her splendour! I look forward to my resurrection body, free from sin and frailty. And I look forward to seeing the glory of God covering the earth as the waters cover the sea.

5. What spiritual disciplines or habits helps you to persevere ahead of eternity?

I keep myself accountable to my friends. I try to continue to grow continually as a believer in Christ, and in usefulness in ministry. I repent of my sins everyday, and put sin to death everyday. I find all my consolation and comfort and joy in God, the father of mercies. I try to grow in love, humility, contentment, patience, forbearance and forgiveness. Each day I praise God, confess my sins, thank him, trust him, cry out to him, turn to him, live in his presence, live by his power, trust his inspired Scriptures, offer my body as a living sacrifice, and pray for others and for myself. I engage in life-long learning about God, about the Bible, about God's world, about other people. Each morning I pray that this day would be my best day of loving and serving God.

The following five resources were recommended on the NextGen platform this year. These books will equip aspiring leaders with the knowledge and skills required for reading and teaching the Bible to others.
1. Introducing the New Testament
Author(s): D. A. Carson; Douglas J. Moo; Andrew David Naselli (Editor)

This book brings the best of New Testament scholarship to the church and makes it accessible to the average reader. This book focuses on historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, and destination of the New Testament books. For each New Testament document, the authors provide a summary of that book's content and discuss the book's theological contribution to the overall canon. The book includes questions at the end of each chapter to facilitate group discussion and personal review. It will help a new generation of students and church leaders better grasp the message of the New Testament.

2. Introducing the Old Testament
Author: Tremper Longman III

This rich guide makes Old Testament scholarship accessible to the average reader. Renowned Bible scholar Tremper Longman III gathers the best in historical research and literary analysis to lead the reader through each book of the Old Testament. Most significantly, Longman explores the meaning of each book in light of its cultural setting. Laypersons as well as church leaders will take away a solid understanding of the historical background and theological message of the Old Testament and be inspired to apply biblical truths to their lives.

3. God's Big Picture
Author: Vaughan Roberts

Sixty-six books written by forty people over nearly 2,000 years, in two languages and several different genres. A worldwide bestseller published in countless sizes and bindings, translations and languages. Sworn by in court, fought over by religious people, quoted in arguments. The Bible is clearly no ordinary book. How can you begin to read and understand it as a whole?

In this excellent overview, Vaughan Roberts gives you the big picture - showing how the different parts of the Bible fit together under the theme of the kingdom of God. He provides both the encouragement and the tools to help you read the Bible with confidence and understanding. And he points you to the Bible's supreme subject, Jesus Christ, and the salvation God offers through him.

4. Take God At His Word
Author(s): Kevin DeYoung

With his characteristic wit and clarity, award-winning author Kevin DeYoung has written an accessible introduction to the Bible that answers important questions raised by Christians and non-Christians. This book will help you understand what the Bible says about itself and the key characteristics that contribute to its lasting significance.

5 more benefits of attending family conferences like Katoomba Easter Convention

5/2/2019

Picture
We recently shared 5 reasons to attend family conferences like Katoomba Easter Convention. In this blog post, we've come up with five extra reasons to join us in 2019!

1. Be encouraged by the faithfulness of others

With Australia becoming increasingly secular, being a disciple of Jesus can be a lonely journey for you and your children. Being able to gather at KEC with thousands of other believers is a great encouragement. Many of our delegates leave KEC refreshed and inspired, simply because they have witnessed thousands of other Christians who also take their faith seriously.
Outstanding talks, encouraging us to swim against the current and live courageously for Jesus.”  - Timothy
2. Return home refreshed and recharged to serve your local church

Many of our delegates serve heavily in their local churches and don’t always have others feeding into them spiritually. KEC is a wonderful opportunity to be recharged in the faith and to be better equipped to serve your local church. In 2018, Public Evangelist, Sam Chan shares three tips for telling people about Jesus:
KEC is such a privileged opportunity to sit back and be fed from the Word of God. When you are constantly "giving out" at your local church, this opportunity to recharge batteries is excellent.” - Cheryl
3. Help your children see the value of Christian gatherings and conversations

Children who grow up going to Christian conferences with their parents often grow up seeing the value of Christian gatherings and conversations. KEC gives parents the opportunity to talk about spiritual matters in a way that isn’t awkward or forced. We often hear from our delegates that their kids are more than happy to share what they’ve learned over meal-times or in the car ride home!
We came not knowing what to expect and have all been amazed by the open friendliness and organisation. Both kids have raved about the leaders and their program. One introvert, one extrovert, both eager to go and learn more about Jesus.” - KEC delegate
4. Model to your children, gospel partnership and service

KEC is powered by the generosity of 300 volunteers. Every year, Christians across Australia sign up to serve in logistics, AV, catering, cooking, photography, videography, ushering, youth and children’s programs and many more! KEC exposes young people to an environment of humble service, both up front and behind the scenes. Over the years, it has been our joy to witness children grow up through our children programs and to see them return as adults to volunteer.
Our family has been blessed by KEC. When our children were young, they joined the Children's Program but now they are old enough to serve in the same program to bless others.” - Joseph
5. Be inspired by intergenerational and interdenominational worship

‘All One In Christ Jesus’ is the heartbeat of KCC events. At KEC, men and women of all ages, life-stages, cultures and from across denominations gather under one roof to worship Jesus. There is something incredibly special about hearing young children sing along to hymns from old, and likewise, it is wonderful to witness older believers share their stories of faith and perseverance. KEC gives families the opportunity to experience unity in diversity, and gives everyone an opportunity to see things with fresh eyes.
I loved it! It wasn’t so much the numbers, but rather the people, ethos and general sense of the Lord being at work in our midst. I found this weekend incredibly encouraging and uplifting. - David Robertson, KEC Speaker
