1,400+ Attended Onward to 'Find Their Voice'

29/6/2017

We praise God for the launch of Onward at Sydney Olympic Park last weekend. Over 1,400 delegates attended one of three age-specific sessions, and many shared that they left the conference empowered to put their trust in Biblical truth, and equipped to use their voice to share the gospel.

Here is some feedback we've received from Onward delegates:
An encouragement to not give up on Jesus!
- Georgia (Youth)
I learnt about the TRUTH and how the evidence all points to the one true God in Jesus Christ. I've learnt to be stronger in my faith due to that and I am still new to all this. It has cleared up a lot of things and I am grateful.
- Kevin (Young Adult)
I found it very encouraging, lots of good reminders about why I am a Christian. I came away feeling like I can comfortably defend what I believe and why. Thank you!
- Eden (Young Adult)
I feel more convicted to get to know the people at my new job, truly listen to their stories, be willing to share mine and in turn the truth of the gospel.
- Kathryn (Young Adult)
I think the premise for the night is great and addresses a growing need. It was timely, very encouraging and helpful. The speakers and worship were great.
- Bridonie (Young Adult)

Onward was also an opportunity for KCC to introduce a shorter conference format in a convenient Sydney location. Many delegates appreciated the new format which featured worship in song, short talks and Q&A:
I loved that it was in an afternoon but still had a weekend conference vibe! Really liked the way that it was set out. Both speakers had some gold nuggets in their talks. - Simon (Young Adult)
I enjoyed the format - it was great, informative, to the point. NO wasted time at all at the conference - very good use of time on a Saturday!
- Debra (Adult)
Loved the format, brilliant and much needed choice of subject. Both speakers were excellent. Q&A time really helpful.
- Wendy (Adult)

5 ways to share Christ with ease and impact  - Stand to Reason

20/6/2017

Sharing matters of faith in the public square is no easy task.

In this insightful post, Greg Koukl from Stand To Reason shares 5 ways we can share about our faith in Jesus Christ with ease and impact.*
1. Ask Questions.

Lots of them. Your first step in any encounter should be to gather as much information as possible. It’s hard to know how to proceed—or even if to proceed—unless you first get the lay of the land. You need “intel,” so to speak, and friendly queries get it for you.
When you need to buy some time to catch your wits, ask a question. When you face a challenge you’re not sure how to deal with, ask a question. When the conversation bogs down and you think it best to move in a new direction, ask a question. Whenever you’re in doubt about how to move forward, ask a question.

2. Slow Down and Simplify.

On a flight back from the midwest I listened while a Christian brother in the row directly behind me vigorously shared his faith with passengers on either side. I was glad for the effort (my wife and I both were praying for him), and he made some fine points, but his conversation ranged from young-earth creationism to Armageddon. That’s a lot to have to swallow to get to Jesus.

Remember, your goal is to put a stone in his shoe, not a boulder. If controversial issues don’t come up, don’t bring them up. Major in the majors. Don’t try to move too quickly or cover too much ground when tackling tough topics. Take complex concerns step by step and piece by piece. Break them into smaller parts and try to make headway on only one part at a time.

3. Contextualize.

I always look for ways to frame my points in terms of the other person’s interests, discipline, or profession. For example, once when an attorney asked me why he needed Jesus, I used a courtroom scene to make my point. This move made the point more persuasive because he saw it in light of things he already knew or procedures he was already familiar with.

Contextualizing your points by tying your comments or explanations to relevant parts of the other person’s world establishes common ground—and is an important tactical skill of an effective ambassador.

4. Be Nice.

Solomon reminds us of something we already know, but still need to be prodded on…often: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Prov. 15:1). Later he adds, “Sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness” (16:21). Obvious stuff, but easily overlooked. Start out brash and thrashing about, and things will turn sour in the end. Start sweet, though, and you’ll probably end sweet.

Do everything you can, then, to help friends feel comfortable with the process. Don’t get mad. Don’t show frustration. Don’t look annoyed. Keep your cool. The more collected you are, the more confident you’ll appear and the more persuasive you’ll sound.

5. Trust God.

No matter how clever you sound, everything you say will turn to dust if God’s Spirit is not in it. No matter how poorly you think you’ve acquitted yourself, even the most meager effort can turn to gold if God decides to move. Never presume on God either way. Be faithful in the moment, then let God do His part—which is all the rest. I’m not saying you need to “tune in” to the Spirit. Encounters don’t usually work that way. Rather, simply do what you can, then trust in God’s sovereign control.

The very first time I ever shared Christ was less than 24 hours after I’d committed my life to Him. It was a long conversation, I felt entirely inept (I was), my close friends were fuming, and I thought it was a complete wash. It wasn’t. Four years later, out of the blue, I discovered what God had been doing that afternoon, and it was something I never would have guessed. It happens all the time.

BASECAMP Speaker Simon Manchester on faith, forgiveness and the value of Proverbs to all men.

7/6/2017

We are thrilled to have Simon Manchester speak on the BASECAMP platform this year.

Simon serves as the rector of St. Thomas Anglican in North Sydney, hosts the 'Christian Growth' program on Hope 103.2 radio station, and inspires many with his life of gospel generosity including his long-standing friendship with a convicted murderer.

Although Simon grew up in a church-going family, he remained a self-confessed 'nominal Christian', up until the age of 18. After his father's death at the age of 14, Simon was relieved of the pressure to attend church each Sunday.

His life changed when in his last year of high school, Simon accepted the invitation to attend a 'Study Camp' organised by Christians. It was at this camp that he realised that although he knew the basic Bible stories, he was a stranger to God who needed forgiveness:
Picture
"While I was at this camp, I was sitting in the back row not particularly interested, and I was listening to talks about Jesus...and as I listened...I realised I was not right with God, I wasn't ready to meet him, if I came face to face with him I would be a stranger, I would be in in trouble. I basically asked him what I needed to do and he told me I needed to be forgiven. So I asked him for forgiveness, and I went home from that camp a very peaceful and joyful boy."

BASECAMP Theme: "Foolproof"

Simon will be speaking at BASECAMP from the book of Proverbs, providing men with practical wisdom for living a 'Foolproof' life.

According to Simon, the book of Proverbs is applicable to all men because it contains practical help for all seasons of life:
"Proverbs is down to earth, no-nonsense practical help in seeing how life works and doesn't work - I've found them a help to my prayers too because each one provides a warning and a blessing."
"I don't think Proverbs has had the place in my life that it should have but I'm aiming to fix that for myself and the men who come to Basecamp. Join me for some help and hope in Proverbs."

Get a taste of some of Simon's talks supplied by MBM Church's Men's Conference:

Standard tickets are available until end of June.

If you invite 5 men you can bring 1 for free!
